Best practices for custom Excel

Here are some essential rules to follow carefully to prevent issues related to custom Excel exports.

  • Do not use block tags.

  • Do not use macros.

  • Do not use conditional formatting.

  • Do not use notes.

  • Avoid merged cells.

  • Do not insert objects.

  • Do not insert charts.

  • Do not place two photo tags in the same cell.

  • Prefer the JPG format for photos rather than PNG.

  • Make sure all tags start and end with two ##.

  • Do not include spaces in tags.

  • For logos, place the image directly in the export file rather than using a Fixed Image field tag.

  • Use standard Excel fonts.

  • If there are multiple Table elements in the form, do not cross tags between Excel tables.

  • Avoid defining different row heights for tags within a table: from page 2 onwards, all rows take the height of the last row on page 1. It is recommended to use a custom Word template (see Create a Custom Excel Report).

  • Do not place a tag inside a calculation formula.

  • There must not be more than 400 columns.

  • There must not be more than 400 rows.

  • There must not be more than 2000 tags.

  • Sheet names must not contain tags.

  • Excel formulas are not supported.

⚠️ Important

The custom Excel export to PDF does not support Excel formulas. If your template contains any, calculations will only be performed during exports in Excel format, and not in the custom PDF.
